CEOs of internet
giants Facebook, Twitter and Google face US hearings about misinformation moderation
in the internet and the Section 230.
Facebook
CEO Mark Zuckerberg,
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and
Google CEO Sundar Pichai face a three and a half hour hearing regarding Section
230 by Republicans and Democrats.
The
politicians want to do something with the Section 230 but the CEOs of the three
internet giants defended it. Section 230 protects them to be sued because the
section says it is not their responsibility for whatever their users post in
their accounts. Altering the Section 230 or abolishing it would make freedom of
speech in the internet be ruin. But politicians are concern about the
consequences of misinformation in the public.
“Facebook,
Twitter and Google said earlier during the hearing that Section 230 has helped encourage
free expression while making it possible for them to moderate content. The CEOs
of all three companies defended Section 230 and raised concerns that any major
changes could result in more removal of free speech.” (CNET)
“Lawmakers
from both parties have introduced bills to revise Section 230. Wicker and two
other influential Republicans introduced legislation in September that would
narrow the scope of the protections under Section 230 to cover the removal of
unlawful material, posts that promote terrorism and content that encourages
self-harm.”(CNET)
